News: April 2014

Derbyshire TV personality Trevor Wragg spoke at the March meeting on the subject of ‘There’s More to Walls’ . Dry stone walling has a history going back thousands of years, it was used to enclose animals and provide shelter from the elements. From about 1750 the Enclosures Acts, meant that dry stone walling had another purpose. The rights of local people to use rural land were overthrown and dry stone walls were constructed by the wealthy to mark their boundaries. The walls are predominantly in the uplands and methods of construction vary according to the countryside location. Trevor won the British Walling Championship in 1996 and more recently was co-ordinator of the Derbyshire Millennium Wall which involved more than 150 wallers from all over the UK.

The April meeting was the AGM, retiring president Ray Lowe congratulated Keith Towns on becoming the new president. Chris Tyrer is now secretary and Bob Mynett the new almoner.

The indoor bowling season ended in heavy defeat against Marriott House Vets, coach Chris Furness however is confident of victory when they next meet and denied rumours of transfers. Chris went on to outline the new fixture list beginning in June.

The new travel season opened with a sell out trip to York, one of the great cities of the medieval world, dominated by the soaring pinnacles of York Minster and encircled by its ancient walls. Visitor attractions include The National Railway Museum, Betty’s Tea Rooms, The Castle Museum and of course The York Chocolate Story. Rowntree’s founded their factory in 1862 and eventually employed over four thousand workers. KitKat remains the all time favourite and six million are consumed daily.

The next visit will be to the lakes on the 18th of June and on the 9th of July the President’s Summer Buffet will be held at Bradwall Village Hall with entertainment provided by magician Pete Turner followed by a Boules competition.
