News: April 2015

Members of The Probus Club of Sandbach assembled at Bradwall Village Hall recently for the 34th annual general meeting.

Retiring president Keith Towns thanked the committee and all the members for their support in ensuring the continued successful future of the club and in particular their wonderful support for the inaugural Presidents Summer Lunch. Membership continues to grow due to excellent fellowship, a good varied range of speakers, very well planned excursions and mini breaks, splendid lunches and of course year round bowling.  He then presented the chain of office to Howard Yates and wished him every success for his term of office.

This years touring season opened with a full coach to the bustling market town of Skipton on a beautiful spring day. The 900 years old Skipton Castle is a very well preserved medieval castle that sits at the top of High Street. During the English Civil War three hundred Royalist held out for three years against Oliver Cromwell’s troops until they finally surrendered. Today High Street is bustling with activity, colourful market stalls line the streets along with a blend of a variety of shops and try to find time to explore the numerous cobbled alleyways. There are many places to dine, from award winning fish and chips and  mouth watering pork pies to top class French cuisine. In the afternoon we walked to the boatyard and had a leisurely cruise on the Leeds Liverpool canal, learning about the canal side mills and the wildlife.

The Eastbourne mini break is fully booked but there are a few seats available on the Llangollen trip on the 15th July and The Severn Valley Railway on the 23rd September, if you wish to come along call Graham Hannen 01270 764777

Fans of Sandbach Probus bowlers will recall that last month I referred to our defeat against Marriott House Vets after taking the lead 52-37 we managed to lose 77 - 98 , I am now pleased to report that in the return fixture we returned to form and won 77 – 80, coach John Hall says that his position was never under threat and his contract has been renewed for another season. Meanwhile crown green coach Chris Furness has just returned from Spain but denies visiting on transfer business explaining that it was a planned holiday, Chris says that his team are ready for the new season and all are at peak fitness and confident.

Members meet at 10.15am on the second Tuesday of the month at Bradwall Village Hall. For more information on arranging to visit the club visit probus-sandbach.org.uk.  JKT.
