News: November 2017

We welcomed Alan Foster as a new member this month who gave a brief personal resume after his introduction.

The members had recently been sent a letter by our Secretary, inviting suggestions for increasing the activities of the Club.   There was a good response with each suggestion being assessed on its merits and the first to be actioned came from Barry Roberts who will now organise informal lunches at the Limes pub immediately following Club meetings.   Those wishing to take part should approach Barry direct.

The speaker this month was our President Dave Slack.   His talk, supported by a slide presentation, described how demolition has evolved since the 1960s and described the cowboy state of the industry then with the huge slum clearance programmes of that era.

He went on to show how the industry is now tightly controlled in respect of health and safety and is now highly professional and has adapted to the differing demands on the industry with the increasing number of high rise buildings now requiring demolition.

The use of very basic machinery in the 1960s has developed into the use of monster machines weighing up to 300 tonnes, reaching up over 200 feet, and costing up to half a million pounds each to undertake precise removal of steel and masonry.

The next meeting will be the Xmas lunch on the 12th December at the Hunters Lodge, Crewe.
