News: September 2016

This month, the Probus Club of Sandbach Travel set off on a holiday tour of Scotland. The standard of holidays organised by Graham Hannen are always excellent but comments from members who were on this tour rated it as one of the best.

The group were based in the Winnock Hotel in the village of Drymen just north of Glasgow and at the foot of the Trossachs National Park. Among the highlights were a boat trip on Loch Katrine and a visit to the canal boat lift, the Falkirk Wheel.

Further down the road the group visited the amazing horse head sculptures weighing almost 600 tons each and known as the mythical Kelpies.

A visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia was of particular interest as the ship’s auxiliary services whilst in port are powered by Foden marine diesel engines built in Sandbach. The ship to shore cutter is also Foden marine diesel powered.

The club bowls double final has been played with Paul Plant and Derek Watts winning through.

This month’s speaker was the Reverend Malcolm Lorimer, a minister in the Methodist Church for South Cheshire whose subject was Crime and the Clergy.

Reverend Lorimer has spent a great deal of time in deprived areas of Northern cities and has had a lifelong interest in crime. He has a number of novels and short stories to his credit and has a deep understanding of crime.

His talk was highly appreciated by the members, particularly as he was able to inject a considerable amount of humour into the presentation.
