Probus Travel Tours for 2017 (1st Edition)

Wednesday 12 April 2017 “Treading the boards and Tudor style” Tour PT 046/17

We begin the year with this most unusual tour - a visit to the Plaza Theatre, Stockport for a guided behind the scenes tour of this magnificent Art Deco building. Once destined to be demolished, the theatre has been brought back from the brink and thoroughly refurbished at a cost of three million pounds to how it was in 1932. It is exceptional. Following our tour we enjoy lunch, which is included, in the Plaza Café and will be served by waiters and waitresses in the style of the 1930’s. In the afternoon we visit Bramall Hall probably one of the most impressive black and white houses in the country. We have a fully guided tour of this beautiful building admiring how it has been sympathetically restored with a £1.6 million grant during 2016. Booking forms available from 14 February 2017

Wednesday 7 June 2017 “A Brief Encounter and Leighton Hall” Tour PT 047/16

One of the most well known films to be produced during the last war was “A Brief Encounter”. Much of the location filming was done on Carnforth Station in 1944 and featured Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson and on this tour we take you back in time to the actual platform where the filming took place. You will see the station buffet and clock and also be able to see the original film in the small theatre. Once we have enjoyed all the nostalgia we then travel the short distance to the magnificent Leighton Hall for our included lunch. Home to the Gillows family and known for many years as Waring and Gillows, one of the finest furniture makers in the country, we enjoy a guided tour with a difference of the Hall. Booking forms available 11 April 2017

Wednesday 11 October 2017 “ The World of Glass” Tour PT 048/17

For many years the name of “Pilkingtons” has been associated with the production of high quality float glass in the UK. On this tour we visit the excellent glass museum in St Helens and learn the full story of glass making in the north west. The visit includes a fascinating glass blowing demonstration with commentary - probably the best you will see. Lunch is included on this tour and you will also be informed of the other industries in St Helens - coal mining, clock making and of course the pharmaceutical industry with the Beecham Pill Company A full day with plenty of seating in this modern museum. Booking forms available from 8 August 2017
