Dr. George Eccleston was this months speaker on the subject of “Mary Queen of Scots – The Captive Queen”. Mary was born in 1542, the only surviving legitimate child of King James V of Scotland, she was six days old when she acceded to the throne. Mary spent most of her childhood in France leaving Scotland to be ruled by regents, she married the Dauphin of France and briefly became queen consort until the King’s early death. Widowed Mary returned to Scotland in 1561 and married her first cousin Lord Darnley which was an unhappy union and ended when Darnley was murdered. Mary was implicated and fled south, abdicating in favour of James her one year old son. She wanted protection from her first cousin once removed, Queen Elizabeth 1 of England. Many English Catholics considered Mary to be the legitimate sovereign of England and as a consequence was perceived as a threat. Elizabeth had her confined in various castles in England and in 1587, after eighteen years in custody, Mary was found guilty of plotting against Elizabeth and executed.
