News: January 2013

This months speaker was Dr. Dick Jones from north Wales who gave us an hilarious account of his medical training at university  followed by National Service. He said that he was somewhat taken aback when he was told that he was to be shipped out from Wales to Singapore for two years . Dr Jones complained “Why me, I’m married with a child, send Dr. Williams he is single”.  The unexpected response was “Don’t you realise that Dr. Williams is the best full back in Wales”.

Christmas lunch was at Hunters Lodge almost one hundred members and their guests enjoyed an excellent meal with first class service. Invited guests included Stuart Blackwell, President of the Rotary Club of Sandbach and his wife and Bob Wayman, President of Saxon Cross Probus Club and his wife.

Graham Hannen has been particularly busy recently organising numerous visits for 2013. The first visit will be to Bletchley Park in April, followed by visits to The Electric Mountain in Llanberis, The Morgan Car factory, East Lancashire Railway and Bury Motor Museum.  The  final visit will be a three or four night stay visiting the famous Thursford Christmas Show, Norfolk and Cambridge.

Howard Yates has arranged another of his very successful  high tea’s at Gee’s. Probus members and their guests will meet  at 5.00pm on Wednesday 23rd January . David Carr and his luncheon club will dine at Sheila’s, Rushton Spencer, on Tuesday 19th of March.

The Probus bowlers are straining at the bit to get back into action. Master bowler John Hall assures me that his bowling team will peak in spring and says that he is confident of a good season. Preparations continue with a visit to the indoor bowling centre at Shrewsbury in February and the Marriott Vets must be feeling  lucky, they have thrown down the gauntlet and a match is to be arranged at Yoxall Centre.

The Probus Club of Sandbach  meets on the second Tuesday in the month at Bradwall Village Hall at 10.15am. If you are interested in joining or wish to arrange a visit please refer to our website at .  J. Keith Towns, member.
