On a warm sunny day in June we left Sandbach for one of Graham Hannen’s famous tours based around the Windermere area of the Lake District. We first visited the village of Backbarrow, located in the picturesque Leven Valley where we visited the Lakeland Motor Museum. The museum houses a wonderful collection of vintage cars, motorcycles and bicycles collected over a period of fifty years. Many of the exhibits such as the Morris Minor, Austin A30, Ford Popular and the BSA Bantam reminded us of our unforgettable first vehicle. Other main attractions at the museum are appropriately the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition and the excellent Ambio Café situated on the banks of the River Leven. Our journey continued by boat on the very placid Lake Windermere to Bowness and then by coach to Ambleside for refreshments and a walk.
The bowling team have had mixed fortunes this season but coach Chris Furness has scotched rumours that he is looking at the transfer market. The next fixture is on the 19th of August when the opponents are Saxon Cross Probus, the winners of this local derby will be awarded the David Lea Challenge Trophy.
One hundred members and guests enjoyed a splendid afternoon at Bradwall Village Hall for the Presidents Summer Lunch. Guests included members from Wilmslow Probus Club, The Probus Club of Sandbach Crosses, The Royal British Legion and The Rotary Club of Sandbach Crosses. Local caterers Beech Tree served an excellent buffet and well known magician Pete Turner moved around the tables astounding everyone with his close quarter illusions. After lunch it was time for the boules, the scene was set, a beautiful summers day in the magnificent Bradwall countryside. Forty players took part in the elimination rounds and then it was the last eight for the nail biting knockout. David Whitworth from the Rotary was the favourite and Marjorie Newton a close contender but Max Higgs from Sandbach Probus pipped David at the post to win the Presidents Cup. Dennis Fricker organised a very popular Croquet competition and this was won by John Hall.
Our next speaker on Tuesday the 12th of August is Dr. George Eccleston on “Mary Queen of Scots, The Young Queen”. The club meets at 10.15am on the second Tuesday of the month at Bradwall Village Hall. For more information on arranging a visit to the club see probus-sandbach. org.uk. JKT.
