Andy Johnson, former R.S.M. in the Grenadier Guards, gave an excellent account of his service in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Initially his duties in Iraq and Afghanistan were to restore law and order but the Taliban had other ideas resulting in many fierce engagements. Andy is now a successful author and company director.
This years touring season opened with a full coach to the bustling market town of Skipton on a beautiful spring day. The 900 years old Skipton Castle is a very well preserved medieval castle that sits at the top of High Street. During the English Civil War three hundred Royalists held out for three years against Oliver Cromwell’s troops until they finally surrendered. Today High Street is bustling with activity, colourful market stalls, a variety of shops, and numerous cobbled alleyways. There are many places to dine, from award winning fish and chips and mouth watering pork pies to top class French cuisine. In the afternoon we walked to the boatyard and had a leisurely cruise on the Leeds Liverpool canal, learning about the canal side mills and the wildlife.
In May we enjoyed a short holiday break to Eastbourne. The excursion was researched and planned to the usual high standard that Graham and Sandra Hannen are renowned for. Included in the price were visits to The Heritage Motor Centre in Warwickshire, The Royal Pavilion at Brighton, Beachy Head, Hastings and for many the highlight of the visits, Chartwell, the former magnificent home and gardens of Sir Winston Churchill.
The next excursion is to Llangollen and a canal trip across the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on the 15th July, a few seats are available from Graham Hannen 01270 764777.
The bowling team have had mixed fortunes, narrowly losing to Marriott House Vets 141 – 149 but victorious against Tarporley Probus 132 – 94. The next match will be against U3A Tudor.
