The speaker at our June meeting was Dr Terry Jones, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society who gave a fascinating insight to a Royal Geographical expedition in 1998 to the uninhabited Melville Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
The expedition was named “In the footsteps of William Edward Parry” and followed the precise route taken by William Parry in 1919 whilst trapped in winter ice until the August of that year.
Photographs and videos gave a vivid account of the severe conditions met along the route and made us all aware of the supreme achievement of William Parry whose trek in 1891 had none of the benefits of modern arctic clothing and equipment.
Our Club Bowlers:
In addition to our normal Tuesday and Friday morning outings in Sandbach Park, we had three matches with other bowling clubs. On 8th June, we played against Marriott House Veterans and unfortunately lost to them. On 14th June, we were away to the White Lion bowlers in Weston where we were once again unsuccessful. We had better luck on 23rd June when we visited Tarporley Probus bowlers and came away with a win.
