Story teller and actress Elizabeth Morris gave a unique and moving presentation on the impact of the first world war on the lives of women in Winsford who had to take over the heavy salt pans at the Premier Salt works. Her story was told through the eyes of her ancestor Violet, wife of salt baron George Hamlett. All four of their son’s volunteered for the army and unfortunately Second Lieutenant Hamlett was killed at Ypres aged twenty one. More recently we stepped further back in history with a talk by Melanie Williamson on Shugborough Hall, originally owned by the Bishop of Lichfield until purchased in 1624 by William Anson, a lawyer, for £1,000. William’s younger son Admiral George Anson was created Lord Anson in 1747 and became First Lord of the Admiralty. In 1960 an agreement was reached whereby the estate would pass to the National Trust in lieu of death duties.
The indoor bowling is almost at the end of the season. In the last match against Marriott House Vets, our team managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, winning at half time 52 – 37 and somehow managing to lose 77 – 98, coach John Hall denies that his position is under threat. Crown Green coach Chris Furness assures me that his team are in top condition and is reticent to discuss transfers. The opening fixture is against Tarporley Probus on the 19th of May.
