News: March 2019

There were three visitors to the 2019 March Member’s Meeting and one new Member, Mike Taylor joined the Club.

The Club’s outdoor bowling season starts on April 2nd on the top green in Sandbach Park. Weather permitting.

Graham Hannen who has tirelessly organised the Club’s outings and Annual Holiday has been seriously ill and unable to attend to the detail of the outings. A statement will be made at the next meeting on the status of outings and holiday but in the meantime, everyone joined in wishing Graham a speedy recovery.

In the absence of Keith Towns, who with wife Betty had to visit Australia on family business, there was no one in the hot seat for “This is Your Life”.

This month’s guest speaker was Mr Peter Webb from Walk Mill Consultancy whose subject was “Fracking Shale Oil and Gas” The talk covered many aspects of this controversial subject and addressed the many objections to the process. He emphasised one objection in particular that covered the question of risk through earth tremors. The level at which contractors are required to suspend drilling is 0.5 magnitude and hardly measurable. When this level is reached, drilling has to cease for 18 hours.

The industry is trying to have the level increased to 1.5 which, they claim, would be hardly discernible with many surface events naturally produce vibrations well in excess of this.

Members were unanimous in their appreciation of the speaker who had succeeded in changing everyone’s negative attitude towards the process.
